Jambura or Pomelo, Citrus grandis

Jambura or Pomelo ( Citrus grandis , family: Rutaceae) a small tree with branches, attaining a height of 10-12 m. The bark of the leafy and much branching tree is grey. It is originated probably in Thailand or Malaysia. It is found in the Southeast Asia nowadays. It is planted as homestead tree in rural areas of Bangladesh.         Other names : Batabi lebu, Jamir.  Leaves are deep green, elliptical-ovate, 8-15 cm long and 6-10 cm wide, slightly dented. Petiole has stipules. And by this characteristic the plant can be identified easily. Like all other members of citrus family, the sweet scent from the leaves is available.   Flowers are bright white, with 5 petals. They are sweet-scented. Where the flower blooms, the whole premise is filled with the honey scent. Numerous stamens surround pistil in the middle of the flower. It flowers in summer and produces fruit in rainy season. Jaam or Black plum  ( Syzygium cumini , family: Myrtaceae) is a medium or large-sized evergreen with spreading and upright branches. The trunk is straight, grey in color and rough. The fruits of the plant is very juicy, nice-colored, tasty and nutritious too. It is a very common tree in Bangladesh. The plant is an evergreen and shadow-giving tree. So it is planted in parks and gardens and beside the avenue and highways. It is found throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia as well as Australia. The original home of the plant is considered as India.   Other names: Indian black berry, Jamun, Jambu Leaves are simple, green, glabrous, coriaceous, ovate-oblong, 6-15 cm long and 3-9 cm wide, apex pointed, alternate, petioled. Propagation of the plant is caused by seeds and cuttings.  Fruits, roots, leaves, seeds and barks are used in dysentery, diabetes, cough, high blood pressure and lever diseases. Motkila or Gin berry ( Glycosmis pentaphyll a, family: Rutaceae) is a woody shrub with branches, attaining a height of 2-5 m. Bark is yellowish. The leaves are almost like the leaves of Blackberry. In Bangladesh it is found on fallow land and in jungles of rural areas. It is also found in South and Southeast Asia and Australia.                                     Other names:  Datmajon, Ash-sheora, Daton, Atesshor. Leaflets 1-5, green, large, entire, lanceolate-oblong, alternate, petioled, aromatic. Flowers are small, creamy white, pubescent, clustered on terminal cyme.  Fruit is a berry, small, round, light pink or whitish, fleshy and juicy when ripe. Seeds 1-3.
