Ghora-neem, China berry tree, Melia azedarach

Ghora-neem or China berry tree (Melia azedarach, family: Meliaceae) is a medium-sized deciduous tree from the family of Neem (azadirachta indica). New shoots come out from mutilated bare trunk. This blackish barked tree is native to South and Southeast Asia and Australia. This short-living but fast growing tree abounds in Bangladesh, especially in the northern region. 

Common names: Ghora-neem, Bokain, Moha-neem, China berry tree, White cedar, Cape lilac, Persian lilac

Flowers are small and lilac in color. Plethora of flowers bloom on axillary inflorescence. The number of sepals and petals in a flower is 5. 

Fruit a drupe, globose, dry fruits are brown in color. Propagation of plant is caused by seeds.


Leaves are dark green, compound, ovate-lanceolate and serrate. Flowers are fragrant and bloom in the summer in Bangladesh.

It is a good herbal plant. Branch, leaf and bark are used as medicine to relieve tooth and gum pain. These are also useful for eye and ear diseases, face spots and leprosy. Bark-soaked water kills worm in human body. Rubbing smashed flower on head is effective in removing headache. Seed oil is good for brain. Timber of this tree is robust and is not attacked by termite and other insects.

Makal or Mahakal ( Trichosanthes tricuspidata , family: Cucurbitaceae) is a woody climber with tendril and branches, attaining a height of 10-12 m. The multiangular-branched plant climbs up very far by holding any tree in the forest. It is found in the hilly areas as well as plain forests and village thickets in Bangladesh. Parul or Fragrant padri tree ( Stereospermum chelonoides , family: Bignoniaceae) is a medium or large-sized deciduous tree with branches, attaining a height of 25 m. Young shoots are pubescent. Bark is grey.  About this flower, a kind of literary madness has been found for a long period of time among the Bengalees. Although it is mentioned numerous times in Bangla literature, the tree is quite difficult to find in Bangladesh.  The great news is, 5 of its trees are found in the courtyard of Bangladesh Security Printing Press School in Gajipur. Guloncho or Heart-leaved moonseed ( Tinospora cordifolia , family: Menispermaceae) is a deciduous creeper with hard and long stem, climbing other trees or fences. Bark on the stem is as thin as paper. Aerial roots come out of the stem when the plant grows older. The plant is found everywhere in Bangladesh except southern part.
